Launch of GSP in Western and Central Africa

On 4-6 February 2013 in Accra, Ghana as part of the "FAO Priority action towards climate change adaptation in West Africa workshop" it was the occasion for establishing the West and Central Africa Soil Partnership.

22 national soil institutions participated and presented the status, needs and priorities for sustainable soil management in their countries. This was indeed a fruitful base for writing a draft priority actions document.

The Accra Communiqué was prepared by the participants in which they fully support the Global Soil Partnership and expressed that there is need for strengthening the soil institutions through capacity development and investing in sustainable soil management practices. Four main areas of action were listed as priority: updating and upgrading of soil information, addressing soil degradation, implementation of sustainable soil management with focus on soil health/fertility and capacity development in all the soil related applications.

It is expected that a plan of action will be jointly developed and that the different partners will advocate for the promotion of sustainable soil management in the region.
