Global Soil Partnership

World Soil Day 2022 - Campaign kicks off!

Join the call by organizing an event, entering the contests, or showing how you are taking action!

03/10/2022

Since 2014, on December 5, FAO, within the framework of the Global Soil Partnership has the official mandate from the United Nations to implement the World Soil Day! The event aims to educate and raise awareness of essential threats to our soils, as the date of December 5th coincides with the official birthday of the late King of Thailand, H.E. Bhumibol Adulyadej, a renowned and prominent soil advocate who officially supported the event at the United Nations.

This year's campaign, "Soils, where food begins" highlights the value of soil for food production, better nutrition, and healthy diets. The soil beneath our feet is a world made up of organisms, minerals, and organic matter that supply humans and animals with food through plant growth. Just like us, soils need balanced and varied input of nutrient in appropriate quantities to be healthy. When crops are harvested, nutrients are removed from the soil. Nutrient deficient soils produce nutrient deficient plants, causing hidden hunger for more than 2 billion people worldwide.

Soils have no borders and are at risk. This year's WSD will focus on the importance of soils for nutrition while serving as a call to action and empathy for those who bear the brunt of these threats!

WSD brings together all soil fans from all over the world in a massive celebration to discuss the threats to our soils. Join in the WSD celebration and help raise awareness of this year's theme!

There are many ways to get involved in WSD, and it's up to you to figure out what you want to do! You can host a local or global workshop, meet with your local community to discuss the topic, plant a tree, watch some of our videos with your kids, or even bake a soil cake!

Small or big, we encourage you to share your celebration with your community by using our premade materials and banners, or posting on social media using #WorldSoilDay #Soils4Nutrition.
