The GSP saddened by the passing of Dr. Tengiz (Gizo) Urushadze, President of the Georgian Soil Science Society and honorary member of the International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS)

The Global Soil Partnership bids a fond farewell to Dr. Tengiz (Gizo) Urushadze, President of the Georgian Soil Science Society, and eminent soil expert who greatly contributed to the work of the Intergovernmental Technical Panel on Soils and the Global Soil Partnership.

Dr. Tengiz Urushadze passed away on November 12, 2021, at the age of 81. A man of great integrity, an internationally renowned scientist, researcher, educator, and academic. The life and achievements of this honorable, benevolent, and generous person are an excellent example of service to one’s homeland, people, and future generations in order to further national progress and development.

Mr. Tengiz Urushadze was actively involved in public life and held a number of high-profile posts in various organizations as well as institutions. He made a great contribution to the definition of the state policy of soil management in Georgia, had close cooperation with GSP as well as ITPS members, was the organizer and speaker of numerous international conferences, published more than 450 scientific papers, up to 50 monographs  and as a lecturer was invited in different International Universities.

Of particular note is Gizo’s international success and recognition. He was the first vice president of the 5th Commission of the International Union of Soil Sciences, an honorary doctor of the State Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan, a member of the Royal Academy of Sciences and Arts of Barcelona (Spain) and of the Veterinary Academy of Sciences of Catalonia (Spain). In 2018, Gizo was elected as an honorary member of the International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS) at the 21st World Congress of Soil Science in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, becoming the first Georgian scientist to receive this great distinction.

 

We appreciate Mr. Urushadze's invaluable contribution to soil science in Georgia and globally. With heavy hearts, we mourn the loss of a remarkable individual, great friend, and outstanding mentor.
