Knowledge Tank for agriculture sectors’ adaptation to climate change

This NAP-Ag Knowledge Tank:

  • Contains tools, methods, case studies and other knowledge materials on climate change adaptation in the agriculture sectors (crops, livestock, forestry, fisheries and aquaculture).
  • Targets national planners, development actors and decision makers.
  • Supports countries in highlighting key resources for adaptation planning and budgeting, especially in formulating and implementing National Adaptation Plans (NAP).

Review of the projected climate change scenarios for Africa’s maize growing regions using the outputs of 19 global climate models. It highlights the urgent need to prioritise research strategies on climate change resilient germplasm development to offset the predicted yield declines. It provides key strategic information to better design adaptation interventions.

This article presents a global assessment of the reliability of crop failure hindcasts for major crops (wheat, rice, soybean, maize). The use of seasonal climatic forecasts to predict crop failures will be useful for monitoring global food production and will encourage the adaptation of food systems to climatic extremes. The article can help in considering how crop failure predictions can be taken into account when planning national adaptation actions.

This paper analyses prevailing key water and nutrient interaction practices (namely stone bund, zaï and half-moon techniques) in order to explore how their outcomes could be linked to climate change adaptation and mitigation. These successful examples can form the basis for informing farmers and agricultural extensionists, as well as future agricultural development plans, policies and investments that pursue sustainable food and nutritional security in the West African Sahel.

This study uses the bio-economic farm model (BEFM) for ex ante assessment of climate change impacts at sub-national levels in Central Asia (Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan), which highlights the production uncertainties and the adaptation options of agricultural producers to changing environments. The findings bring forward large differences in climate change impacts across the studied farming systems.

Through a crop growth simulation model for groundnut (CROPGRO-Groundnut model), this report quantifies the potential benefits of incorporating drought and heat tolerance and yield-enhancing traits into the commonly grown cultivar types at two sites each in India (Anantapur and Junagadh) and West Africa (Samanko, Mali and Sadore, Niger). The results obtained at the target sites are transferable to other sites with similar climatic and edaphic conditions. The CROPGRO-Groundnut model and the simulation approach used to develop and evaluate virtual cultivars for drought and heat tolerance can be useful for developing crop adaptation strategies under climate change in the groundnut regions of the world as part of national adaptation plans.

This study assesses the regional vulnerability of wheat production to climate change in India by quantifying the impacts and adaptation gains in a simulation analysis using the InfoCrop-WHEAT model. It emphasises the need for intensive, innovative and location-specific adaptations to improve wheat productivity in the future climate. Full article is available only through payment or registration.

Drawing on global examples with a focus on African case studies, this paper demonstrates the versatile roles of trees and agroforestry in reducing smallholders' exposure to climate-related risks. It identifies challenges in the promotion and adoption of agroforestry at the farm and landscape levels as a climate change adaptation strategy. The paper highlights areas for further research, policy and dissemination efforts, and identifies entry points for adotion of agroforestry.
