Training on Use of Agro-climatic Atlas in Land Suitability Studies and Land Use Planning

14/02/2022

A two-day training workshop was organized for the officials from Nagaland Government on the “Use of Agro-climatic Atlas in Land Suitability Studies and Land Use Planning”  by FAO in collaboration with the North Eastern Space Application Centre (NESAC) on February 09 and 10, 2022.

FAO is providing technical assistance to the Government of Nagaland in the IFAD (International Fund for Agricultural Development) funded project “Fostering Climate Resilient Upland Farming Systems in the Northeast (FOCUS)” to support small and marginal farmers overcome emerging challenges in agriculture.

As a part of this initiative, FAO collaborated with NESAC for developing block level agroclimatic maps for the eight project districts of Nagaland and to capacitate State officials in using these maps in micro-level land use planning.

The workshop saw the participation of 23 officials from the Government of Nagaland (GoN). The training was conducted in a hybrid mode, where classroom sessions were delivered online by the scientists from NESAC, and hands-on demonstrations were provided to participants with help of the Nagaland Geographic Information System (GIS) and Remote Sensing Centre of GoN.

As part of the training, NESAC presented a range of maps to the participants, while demonstrating  their usage in land use planning. During the hands-on session, a land suitability study and land use planning were carried out for two blocks in Kiphire district using the agro-climatic atlas and other physiographic and soil parameters.
