Powering innovation across agrifood systems

Innovating for a Better Future

FAO places innovation at the heart of the transformation to MORE efficient, inclusive, resilient and sustainable agrifood systems for better production, better nutrition, a better environment and a better life, leaving no one behind. Supporting the 2030 Agenda, the FAO Strategic Framework 2022–31 positions innovation as a main catalyst for change.

Through its Office of Innovation, FAO mainstreams innovation across programmes, fosters collaboration through co-creation within FAO, and builds transformative partnerships to drive systemic change. FAO embraces all types of innovation — from high-tech to frugal solutions — contextualizing them to support its Members and local communities in their innovation journey.

Through science and innovation, FAO can effectively deliver on the Four Betters

Our approach

FAO is exploring emerging trends, catalyzing ideas into practice and scaling solutions systemically with a focus on democratizing science, technology and innovation.

Impact requires scale and scaling innovation requires the understanding that one size does not fit all. FAO applies global expertise to local realities by fostering transformative partnerships and needs-based tailored solutions.

From digital tools, biotechnologies and community-driven innovations like Farmer Field Schools 2.0., as well as to policy support, research and acceleration programmes, innovation must be people-centred, demand-driven and market-based to be effective.
