Working Party on Production Systems for the Bioeconomy (WP-PRO)

WP-PRO focuses on sustainable production systems for poplars, willows, and other fast-growing trees, contributing to the bioeconomy through innovations in management, processing, and utilization.
Action plan 2025-2026
  • Networking and membership: Strengthen global and regional expert networks, update the WP-PRO directory, and expand participation to new countries and additional fast-growing tree species.
  • Databases: Develop a state-of-the-art database on harvesting, utilization and product properties of fast-growing trees, drawing on national reports and scientific publications.
  • Knowledge products: Produce highlight sheets, science briefs, and white papers (e.g. on new opportunities for poplar plantations, with a focus on Europe and the EU), as well as technical and scientific papers on engineered wood products, agroforestry systems and short rotation coppice.
  • Capacity building: Support young scientists through short-term scientific missions (STSM), training, and conference participation, fostering the next generation of researchers.
  • Conferences and outreach: Organize dedicated sessions and webinars, and engage in major international events (e.g. IRG56 in Japan, WCTE 2025 in Australia, IPS IX 2026 in the USA) to share results and build partnerships.
