EFCA Executive Director visits FAO

07/03/2022

Dr Susan Steele, the new Executive Director of the European Fisheries Control Agency (EFCA), visited the FAO Fisheries and Aquaculture Division at FAO Headquarters, in Rome, Italy, on Monday 7 March 2022.

EFCA is a specialized agency of the European Union with a mission to promote the highest common standards for control, inspection and surveillance under the European Union Common Fisheries Policy (CFP).

The FAO Fisheries Global and Regional Processes (NFIFP) team provides guidance and support to FAO Members in the development and implementation of international fisheries instruments with special attention to fisheries monitoring, control and surveillance (MCS) matters.

Dr Steele and Mr. Pedro Galache, Head of Unit Coast Guard and International Programme, met with Dr Manuel Barange, FAO Fisheries and Aquaculture Division Director, Dr. Matthew Camilleri, NFIFP Leader, and Ms. Alicia Mosteiro, NFIFP Fisheries Officer, to discuss the possible areas of collaboration in fisheries control and cooperation.

Both units lead capacity development programmes including training courses, specialized workshops and delivery of technical assistance that could benefit from good coordination, particularly in African countries.

The visit paved the way for a new collaborative phase.
