National Consultative Meeting on Formulation of Liberia’s Application for Codex Trust Fund

Monrovia, Liberia - November 25, 2020 FAO Country Rep Madam Mariatou Njie in partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO) attended the national consultative meeting for the formulation of Liberia’s application for the Codex Trust Fund. Also present were senior officials from the government of Liberia, Honorable George D. Wolo, Deputy Minister of Commerce, Hon. Morris K. Sanyon, Assistant Minister for Industry, and Dr. Patrick Kpanyen, Deputy Director General for Administration, National Public Health Institute of Liberia.

Madam Njie stated, “The FAO/WHO Codex Trust Fund is a timely opportunity to provide Liberia's government with financial and technical resources to improve the structure and functioning of the national Codex Committee”. Codex standards and guidelines plays a critical role in ensuring healthy diets and safe food for the people of Liberia. Madam Njie reaffirmed FAO's commitment to deepen its collaboration and technical cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Commerce, and Ministry of Health, thanking the government for creating a conducive environment for collaboration and partnership.

The Codex Trust Fund supports countries to build strong, solid and sustainable national capacity to engage in Codex. Between 2004 and 2015, the FAO/WHO Project and Fund for Enhanced Participation in Codex (Codex Trust Fund) supported over 2,300 participants from developing and transition economy countries to participate in the international standard development process, and provided FAO/WHO Codex training to over 1,200 people to boost the effectiveness of their participation in the Codex Alimentarius Commission.
