Third Report on the implementation of the United Nations Decade of Family Farming 2019–2028 (UNDFF)

TheReport on the implementation of the United Nations Decade of Family Farming 2019-2028 for the period 2023–2024 has been published and is available in all UN official languages.
The report has been submitted to the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) and the Executive Office of the Secretary-General, and was presented on 15 October 2025 at the Second Committee of the UN General Assembly.
The biennium 2023–2024 marked the end of the first half of the Decade, which closed with very positive implementation results. Four countries approved national action plans on family farming, bringing the total to have approved such plans from 2019 to 16.
Since the launch of the Decade in 2019, a total of 385 policies, laws and regulations have been developed and approved to support family farming and the transformation to more efficient, inclusive, resilient and sustainable agrifood systems. At least 90 intersectoral coordination mechanisms, including 45 national committees for family farming and other multistakeholder platforms for policy dialogue, have been established or reinforced. More than 2,625 relevant actors have been involved in these processes, including 1,853 family farmers’ organizations and federations, of which 770 are women’s organizations and 50 youth organizations.
The Report recommends that in the coming years greater emphasis should be placed on the effective implementation of the UNDFF through increased financial resources and renewed political commitment. In doing so, policy dialogues and intersectoral approaches that maximize the social, economic and sustainable contributions of family farming should be fostered, recognizing and valuing the role of family farmers in the elaboration and implementation of public policies.
The Report was developed by the joint FAO–IFAD Secretariat of the UNDFF, under the guidance of the UNDFF International Steering Committee. It was based on an extensive and inclusive consultation conducted between February and May 2025, which included the participation of 213 actors from 57 countries.
