In 2011, the FAO State of Food and Agriculture (SOFA) 2010–11 made the “business case” for addressing gender inequalities and empowering women in agriculture and rural employment. Much has changed since then, and while closing the gender gap in productivity is still important, it is no longer enough, as women’s participation in agrifood systems is changing and is now more complex than ever before.

The new FAO report provides a comprehensive picture of the status of women not only in agriculture, but across agrifood systems. It presents extensive data and lessons learned about gender in agrifood systems, with particular focus on how women participate in and benefit from socio-economic opportunities. Read more here. Furthermore, it demonstrates how shocks in agrifood systems, such as COVID-19, have a differential impact on men, boys, women and girls and their coping strategies.

Tune in live to hear from the FAO Chief Economist, Máximo Torero Cullen, who will brief connect virtually to brief journalists from the United Nations in New York on the report and its latest findings.
