When scientists confirmed the outbreak of screwworm in Libya in 1989, United Nations agencies and the Libyan authorities joined forces to tackle the emergency. The Food and Agriculture Organization co-ordinated the campaign, turning to the one method known to destroy the fly: The Sterile Insect Technique.
