Online discussion: Evidence of the economic value of One Health initiatives

16/05/2024

FAO and colleagues from CIRAD recently published a systematic literature review on existing evidence of the economic value of One Health initiatives. This paper looked at studies that quantified and compared the costs and benefits of One Health initiatives, both monetary and non-monetary. The authors reviewed existing studies to understand where evidence exists to support investments and where the gaps are. Moreover, they looked at how these values are typically measured and what challenges are encountered in conducting economic evaluations of One Health initiatives.

The discussion around economic justification is crucial. While there is widespread recognition of the importance of One Health approaches, securing funding for these initiatives at the country level can be challenging. This paper delves into the concept of ‘the four Cs’ of One Health – communication, collaboration, coordination, and capacity building – and explores how they contribute to the added value of One Health initiatives. By understanding the economic impact of One Health, we can build a stronger case for continued and increased investment in these critical programmes.

We encourage you to join the online discussion to share your thoughts and experiences:

For example, what are your thoughts on:

  • The findings of the review.
  • The challenges and opportunities associated with measuring the economic value of One Health initiatives.

Please feel free to share:

  • Real-world examples of the economic value of One Health approaches.
  • Strategies for strengthening the four Cs of One Health to maximize their economic impact.
  • Practical ideas for improving funding and financing of One Health.

We look forward to a stimulating discussion that will help us further advance the One Health agenda and secure the resources needed to ensure its success.
