08/09/2023

In a recent one-day consultative meeting led by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the urgent need for a robust national policy and legal framework to address AMR, especially concerning food safety, was underscored.

AMR is a global health threat affecting healthcare, veterinary, and agricultural sectors. The meeting's goals were to evaluate Pakistan's current AMR policy, gather stakeholder input, and identify relevant legal provisions.

Dr. Khalid Ashfaque of the Ministry of National Food Security & Research stressed the importance of collaborative efforts, while Dr. Aamer Irshad from FAO emphasized AMR's grave global impact. FAO played a pivotal role, with Dr. Peter Flanagan providing an overview of the project, and Mr. Sharafat Ali Chaudhry, FAO's Legal Consultant, outlining meeting objectives. Productive group sessions, facilitated by Mr. Sharafat Ali's team, included insights from various organizations. Dr. Muhammad Afzal concluded by advocating FAO's 'One Health' approach, recognizing the interconnectedness of human health, animal health, and the environment.

Federal ministries, allied departments, and organizations participated actively, collectively addressing AMR.

In summary, the meeting highlighted the need for a comprehensive AMR policy and legal framework in Pakistan, with efficient implementation mechanisms. Collaboration with stakeholders remains crucial in adopting a holistic approach against AMR.
