FAO + Spain: Working for global food and nutrition security

23/06/2021 -

Spain, mainly through the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) and the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, has been a firm ally in all aspects of FAO's work.

The latest FAO + Spain Report highlights the cooperation between FAO and Spain in the last ten years, mainly in the fisheries sector and in the promotion of policies for the right to food, the protection of plant genetic resources and the improvement of food security.

Spain's commitment is reflected in its total contributions to FAO, which amounted to USD 291 million between 2010 and 2020. More recently, in the 2014-2020 period, the country's voluntary contributions were directed mainly towards projects in Latin America and Africa, as well as interregional initiatives (respectively 41%, 25% and 27%). The other 7% of the contributions went to the Near East. In the same period, most of Spain's contributions were directed to FAO's work to eradicate hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition (47%), mainly in Latin America, followed by efforts to make agriculture, forestry and fisheries more productive and sustainable (24%), resilience and response to threats and crises (16%) and efforts to promote more inclusive and efficient agricultural and food systems (4%).

In the coming years, FAO and Spain will continue to work around common priorities to address emerging global challenges. In 2020, Spain generously contributed EUR 3.2 million to FAO, of which more than 50% was directed towards mitigating the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic in the medium and long term.
