22 September 2020, Rome - FAO welcomed an announcement today by Xi Jinping, President of the People's Republic of China, that his country will support the UN agency's South-South Cooperation (SSC) efforts with an additional $50 million in funding. "We are very grateful for this new $50 million contribution announced by President Xi, as it provides a strong boost to the work of the FAO-China South-South Cooperation Programme," FAO Director-General QU Dongyu said.

FAO South-South Cooperation project began in late 2019 between China and Madagascar. Chinese experts on rice production came to Madagascar to introduce a greater-yielding type of rice, as well as to provide training to farmers on how to grow and harvest it.

The latest FAO-China South-South Cooperation (SSC) Programme fact-sheet was launched today. It touches on the importance and uniqueness of South-South and Triangular Cooperation (SSTC) approaches to support countries facing transboundary challenges, such as high-impact transboundary animal diseases (TADs).
