Hazard communication

Introduction

When hazard classification of a pesticide according to GHS is done, information about hazards must be communicated to the users of the pesticide product, so that they can handle the product safely and reduce the risk for damage. This is done by using the standardized labelling elements and Safety data sheets (SDS) as described in the GHS.

Labels

The labelling is the first warning a user gets, and the only warning for a consumer. The labelling elements  (hazard pictograms, signal word, hazard statements and precautionary statements) are designed to make it easy to understand the products hazards.

More details on Labelling are provided elsewhere in the Toolkit.

Safety Data Sheet

To the professional user, the hazards are also communicated through the SDS, since the professional user often handle bigger volumes of the product and in more frequent intervals. It gives more comprehensive hazard information to the professional user about how to handle the product safely to protect health and the environment, such as for example instructions about safe storage and personal protection equipment.

More details on the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) is provided elsewhere in the Toolkit.
