Training

Training is a core element of capacity development interventions. Regular and adequate training is key to develop and maintain capacity to ensure adequate implementation of policy/legal, institutional and operational requirements at national, regional and international levels.

In order to supplement the specialized technical assistance provided to developing countries, FAO has developed an intensive Global Training Programme which contributes to national, regional, and global efforts to prevent, deter and eliminate IUU fishing.

The Global Training Programme encompasses a series of specialized courses addressing different needs and learners’ profiles. The courses are created from a combination of modules, inclusive of theoretical and practical lessons. The details are explained in the Prospectus FAO fisheries training programme in support of the implementation of international instruments.

FAO delivers these courses on a national and regional basis in collaboration with academic institutions, organizations and entities of repute. Regional courses are mostly delivered in selected training hubs, such as the Busan Hub, the Vigo Hub and the Malta Hub. Beneficiaries of these courses include officials from developing States institutions designated by their governments following a specific call/invitation from FAO.

The Global Training Programme for 2025 – 2027 is being funded by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries of the Republic of Korea.

FAO has also developed an introductory series of e-learning courses to support the Global Training Programme. Access the series here.
