News - 11.06.2015

Caritas Guatemala and Caritas Nicaragua presented in Managua and Guatemala City a study on the implementation of the Voluntary Guidelines to Support the Progressive Realization of the Right to Adequate Food in the Context of National Food Security (Right to Food Guidelines) in both countries. Also in Guatemala, the Social Collective for the Right to Food published its Alternative brief on the right to food in Guatemala, published annually since it started its activities in 2007.

The book Right to food: theoretical and practical approaches for discussion edited by Olga Cecilia Restrepo-Yepes and Cesar Augusto Molina Saldarriaga and written by the Observatory of the Right to Food in Latin America and the Caribbean (ODA-ALC), compile a series of articles stemming from the first call for research of the Observatory carried out in 2011. The chosen studies were written in light of the Hunger-Free Latin America and the Caribbean Initiative 2025 and were financed and technically supported by FAO, the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation and Development (AECID) and by the selected universities.

During the 28th Session of the Human Rights Council (1–28 March 2015) a lot of issues and debates related to the right to food had been discussed.  In particular, OHCHR invited FAO to join the Annual Discussions on Climate Change, on a special panel aimed at linking climate change and impacts on the right to food. While, the Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food, Ms. Hilal Elver, presented her first annual report, focused on the legal obstacles faced in the achievement of the right to food, as well as examples on good practices as a means of encouraging States to develop judicial remedies in accordance with the Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.

On March 4th, the FAO office in El Salvador and its counterpart, CONASAN, organized a National Forum on the right to food that provided an opportunity for the country, based on an inter-institutional outlook and a State vision, to gather a wide range of institutions which have been contributing to this human right and saw the need for coordination to further improve. The Forum provided the opportunity to launch "Advances and obstacles in the implementation of the Voluntary Guidelines to Support the Progressive Realization of the Right to Adequate Food in the Context of National Food Security – The case of El Salvador", which systematize and communicate advances and challenges of the State related to the substantive application of the Right to Food Guidelines in light of the retrospective process for the tenth anniversary and the 41st session of the Committee on World Food Security.

As part of its strategy to achieve food sovereignty, the government of Bolivia approves a new law to regulate complimentary school meals and to foster a social economy by means of produces purchased from local producers.
Law No 622 on School Feeding in the Framework of Food Sovereignty and Plural Economy, approved by the Plurinational Legislative Assembly, aims to contribute to educational performance and promote the permanence of students in the educational entities of the Plurinational Education System, through a safe, opportune and culturally appropriated diet.

As 2014 marks a decade since the adoption of the Right to Food Guidelines, FAO has taken advantage of the opportunity to lead a series of activities to raise awareness of the Guidelines and the right to adequate food, highlight the achievements and gaps in their implementation and reaffirm the commitment to implement them. In concluding this year of activities and to mark Human Rights Day, the FAO Right to Food Team is launching two important elements: 7 Thematic Studies as well as the Right to Food Timeline.

The Dominican Postal Institute launched an issuance of postage stamps under the motto "For the Right to Food" at the Mirador de Santo Domingo Cultural Centre, on the occasion of the World Food Day. The stamps were presented during the prize awarding ceremony to the young winners of the National Contest of Drawings for Illustrating Stamps for the Right to Food, organized by the Chamber of Deputies of the Dominican Republic.

The 41st session of the Committee on Food Security (CFS) provided the opportunity for some Member Countries (El Salvador, India and Jordan) to share their national experiences in implementing the Right to Food Guidelines, and for all CFS Member Countries, to reaffirm their commitment to implement the Right to Food Guidelines and strive for the realization of the right to adequate food of all in the years to come through the consensually adopted Decision Box “Right to Food – Ten Year Perspective”.

2014 marks ten years since the adoption by consensus of the Voluntary Guidelines to Support the Progressive Realization of the Right to Adequate Food in the Context of National Food Security (Right to Food Guidelines). To celebrate this important year, and with a view to lay down a renewed impetus for further work on the right to food, FAO conducts a series of activities aiming at raising awareness of the Guidelines and the right to food, highlight the achievements and gaps in its implementation and reaffirm the commitment to implement them.

Events - 15.10.2014

In the context of the celebration of the Ten-Year Retrospective on the Right to Food Guidelines, FAO is pleased to present an art exhibition organized in collaboration with the Rome University of Fine Arts (RUFA). Talented young students from the RUFA contribute to raising awareness on the right to food and its different dimensions through the realization of works of art made using various art techniques. The exhibition features three artistic fields: photography, fashion design and engraving.
