Official launch of the SAVE FOOD Initiative on the Russian market

FAO Liaison Office with the Russian Federation has teamed up with Messe Dusseldorf Moscow to organize a special event at the “Upakovka-2017” Processing and Packaging Industry Trade Fair, member of the Interpack Alliance. The event will be held the first day of the Fair, 24 January, and will feature a ceremony of accession to the Global Initiative on Food Loss and Waste Reduction (SAVE FOOD) of four Russian organizations, the Dairy Union of Russia; Foodbank “Rus”; Sfera Publishing House; and the “Tara and Upakovka” (“Package and Packaging”) Magazine. The ceremony will be followed by a conference on the current challenges of combatting food loss and waste in Russia and throughout the world. + READ MORE

FAO praises UAE Food Bank initiative

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations praised the decision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai, to institutionalise the efforts of fighting hunger and food waste, through launching the UAE Food Bank Initiative. The newly established UAE food bank will gather many stakeholders to collect excess food from hotels, supermarkets, restaurants and farms. It will store and package the food for distribution, while inedible food will be recycled for different usages, including but not limited to animal feed and fertilisers. + READ MORE


Waste of food, natural resources, and human talent taking a toll on Mediterranean agriculture and rural development

A new book published by FAO and the International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies (CIHEAM) warns of "triple waste" posed by the misuse of natural resources, food waste and losses, and a slow-leaching away of traditional know-how. Community of Practice Forum discussion on Postharvest Loss technologies business models

The CoP on food loss reduction Forum hosts a new online discussion aimed at comparing the different business models used by a variety of projects and programmes worldwide. The discussion will be useful to share information on approaches applied for introducing and promoting relevant technologies. In a few decades around 75 percent of the population will be living in cities. With the Sustainable Development Goals in mind, we have a window of opportunity for action. But how? How can we feed cities? There is a need to provide a national and regional framework .This includes ensuring the right to food in subnational legislation. Sustainable value chains for sustainable food systems

The FAO/UNEP programme organized, in June 2016, a workshop on “Sustainable Value Chains for Sustainable Food Systems”. The various sessions were focused on different aspects in order to integrate perspectives of various actors, the private sector and civil society along with contributions from FAO, research and academia. The first session was devoted to resource use efficiency, including recycling and reducing food loss and waste. An (edible) solution to extend produce’s shelf life
The New York Times

Apeel has developed a method for creating imperceptible, edible barriers that the company says can extend the life of produce like green beans and berries by as much as five times. Apeel could increase yields by reducing losses at the harvest level, which would translate into lower prices for consumers. It could reduce food waste and the use of pesticides and increase the varieties of fruits and vegetables available. + READ MORE


University of Guelph researchers have created course modules for high school students on food waste
The Food Institute of the University of Guelph

Professor Evan Fraser and Amanda Wilson-Ciocci, from the department of geography, have created Unit Plans for high school teachers around the world on food security and food waste. The unit plans, called #foodcrisis and Food Waste, have been distributed to over 200 teachers, from Ontario to as far away as Beijing, China and Adelaide, Australia. The unit plans include lesson plan ideas with curriculum guides, videos, quizzes, assignments and personal challenges to help students thoroughly examine these complex issues. + READ MORE
