FAOSTAT releases today new structural data from agricultural censuses under FAO's World Programme for the Census of Agriculture (WCA). The 2026 update adds new data for 15 countries and territories to the FAOSTAT domain under the World Programme for the Census of Agriculture (WCA) 2020 round, bringing coverage to 73 countries and territories and 81 censuses, including two first time participants (Nauru and Timor-Leste).

The FAOSTAT domain Structural data from agricultural censuses was launched in 2022 to disseminate data collected in national censuses of agriculture at the agricultural holding level. The domain presents structural data from agricultural censuses conducted since the 1930s under FAO's World Programme for the Census of Agriculture (WCA) rounds. Typical structural data include the size and number of agricultural holdings, the holder’s gender, the type of land tenure, the legal status of holders, as well as information on land use, crop area and farm labour.

Main findings:

  • The 2026 update adds new data for 15 countries and territories to the FAOSTAT domain under the World Programme for the Census of Agriculture (WCA) 2020 round, bringing coverage to 73 countries and territories and 81 censuses, including two first‑time participants (Nauru and Timor‑Leste).
  • Three new structural disaggregations – holders by age and sex, holdings by number of parcels, and holdings by household size – are introduced for 154 countries and territories across the WCA 1960–2020 rounds, enriching the scope of global structural indicators.
  • The data show a wide demographic variation across countries, with the share of holders under 35 years observed in Samoa (42 percent), while the share of holders over 65 years exceeds 50 percent in Japan, the Republic of Korea and other high‑income economies.
  • Land fragmentation patterns show strong contrasts: holdings in Serbia have on average 6.2 parcels, and 15 percent of the holdings have 10 parcels or more, while most holdings consist of a single parcel in Belarus and several American and Pacific Island countries.
  • The household composition in agricultural holdings exhibits significant diversity, from Burkina Faso, where nearly half of the holdings have at least ten household members, to Paraguay, Chile and Belarus, where over 80 percent of holdings have at most three household members.
