Regional Workshop on SDG Indicator 2.1.2 (Apia, Samoa)

Apia (Samoa), 02/12/2024 - 05/12/2024

FAO conduced a regional workshop on the Prevalence of Moderate or Severe food insecurity, based on the Food Insecurity Experience Scale (FIES) in Apia, Samoa, from December 2nd to 5th, 2024.

As the custodian agency for food security SDG Indicator 2.1.2, FAO is responsible for building technical capacity in member countries to monitor progress towards SDG Target 2.1: End hunger and ensure access for all people, particularly the poor and vulnerable, to safe, nutritious, and sufficient food all year round by 2030.

Overall, the workshop aimed to build a strong foundation for data-driven decision-making in food security within the Pacific region. It trained, assisted, refreshed, and enhanced National Statistics Offices (NSOs) staff/officers in processing and analyzing their FIES data collected in the HIES to estimate SDG Indicator 2.1.2.

Outcomes:

  • Enhanced Technical Capacity: Participants possess the theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary to estimate FIES-based food security indicators effectively.
  • Proficient Use of FIES: Attendees are able to include FIES in various national surveys and understand the statistical concepts underpinning its methodology.
  • Improved Data Analysis Skills: Participants learn to validate FIES data, fit the Rasch model, and calibrate national scales to the global scale.
  • Effective Communication of Results: Attendees gain skills in interpreting Rasch model outputs and effectively communicating results to diverse audiences, thus increasing the impact of their findings.
  • Informed Policy Formulation: By understanding how to collect and analyze FIES data, participants are equipped to provide insights that can guide national food security policies, ultimately contributing to the achievement of their National Development Plan (NDP) and the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 2.1.2 by 2030.
  • A workshop Training Report: The report summarized exchanges with countries, highlighting opportunities and challenges, as well as outlining an agreed way forward regarding technical assistance and capacity development tailored for countries in collecting, reporting, and monitoring SDG Indicators 2.1.1 and 2.1.2 under FAO custodianship.

Participants:

In total, 25 participants from Cook Islands, Fiji, the Federated States of Micronesia, Kiribati, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Marshall Islands, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu attended the workshop.
