Regional workshop on SDG Indicator 5.a.2 (Women’s equal rights to land ownership) in Central Asia


FAO hosted a multi-stakeholder workshop on SDG Indicator 5.a.2 (Women’s equal rights to land ownership) in the Central Asia region on December 20.

Indicator 5.a.2 measures the extent of women’s disadvantages in ownership of and rights to land, as well as equal legal rights to land ownership. Together with indicator 5.a.1, it provides a basis for policy measures aimed at securing equal opportunities and access to rights and resources.

As the custodian agency for SDG indicators 5.a.1 and 5.a.2, FAO supports the efforts of the countries in monitoring target 5.a on equal rights to economic resources, property ownership and financial services.

The capacity development session in English and Russian aimed to:

  • raise awareness among national institutions about the importance of SDG 5 for the 2030 Agenda as well as the need to improve data collection on SDG 5.a.2, 5.1.1, 5.a.1, and 1.4.2 as a baseline for reporting progress;
  • strengthen the capacities of national institutions to collect data on SDG Indicator 5.a.2 including by discussing challenges and good practices in the region and beyond (in particular Western Balkans and South Caucasus);
  • trigger an informed discussion on the challenges of rural women in Central Asia and ways to advance women’s land rights and gender equality to promote inclusive rural transformation and sustainable development.

The webinar participants were the representatives of the national SDG coordination mechanisms, and multisectoral delegations, including the Ministries of Agriculture and Women’s Affairs from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Türkiye, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, national legal experts involved in SDG 5.a.2 reporting; regional, subregional and national FAO gender focal points, partners, national statistical offices, SDG coordination mechanisms and other key stakeholders.
