Statistical Institute of Belize Hosts National Workshop on Food Insecurity Data Analysis

Belmopan (Belize), 24/11/2025 - 27/11/2025

As the custodian agency for Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Indicator 2.1.2, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) continues to support countries in monitoring progress toward SDG Target 2.1: "End hunger and ensure access by all people, in particular the poor and people in vulnerable situations, including infants, to safe, nutritious and sufficient food all year round."

From November 24 to 27, FAO is organizing a national technical workshop in Belmopan to strengthen the capacity of national institutions in Belize to analyze food insecurity data. The focus is on the application of the Food Insecurity Experience Scale (FIES) methodology to derive official SDG 2.1.2 estimates using data collected through the Labor Force Surveys (LFS) from 2021, and the Census in 2022.

Expected Outputs:

  • Enhanced technical capacity of national institutions to analyze food security data and produce accurate, reliable indicators.
  • Improved use of SDG 2.1.2 estimates to inform national monitoring frameworks, classification systems
  • Official estimates of SDG 2.1.2 derived from LFS 2021, 2023 and 2024 data, as well as Census in 2022.
  • Reports on the Food Insecurity in Belize for the covered years.

Participants:

The workshop is attended by 15 participants representing the Statistical Institute of Belize actively engaged in data collection, analysis, food security and nutrition monitoring in Belize.
