Organic yerba mate: an environmentally, socially and financially suitable agroforestry system

This article shows how small to medium-sized farmers grow yerba mate, a native tree from South America, in an agroforestry system in combination with timber trees. The farmers get a price surplus when the yerba mate leaves can be sold as organic products. The agroforestry system favours organic farming of the yerba mate because the trees protect the yerba mate plants and also contribute to soil protection and soil conservation. The article presents case studies of organic agroforestry systems of yerba mate from private companies, families and farmers cooperatives located in Misiones in northeast Argentina.
