WIEWS - World Information and Early Warning System on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture

This indicator focuses on area supplied with seed meeting the quality standard of the formal seed sector for the five most widely cultivated crops in the country of the reporting National Focal Point (NFP).

It is based on information reported in response to question 12.4 of the Reporting Format for Monitoring the Implementation of the Second Global Plan of Action for PGRFA.

Question 12.4 requests the NFP to provide, for each of the five most widely cultivated annual crops and for the most recent year with available relevant statistics, the total harvested area, the amounts of seed imports and exports, the amount of seed production meeting the quality standard of the formal seed sector and the average sowing rate.

The term ‘meeting the quality standard of the formal seed sector’ refers to seed produced from released varieties that meet the distinctiveness, uniformity and stability (DUS) criteria with adequate viability and purity. In fact, the question focuses in principle on certified seed. Furthermore, it should be noted that this question also addresses perennial crops for which planting material is used other than seeds. It is suggested to note the reporting on crops that are perennial in the Comment box.

It is assumed that the remaining area that is not sown with seed from the formal sector consists of farm-saved seed, either seed acquired from the formal seed sector in previous years, or seed of farmers’ varieties or landraces.

The information is provided according to a table as described below.

Column descriptions:

Year

Name of annual crop

Total crop harvested area (ha)

Seed imports in the previous year (tonnes)

Seed exports in the previous year (tonnes)

Seed production meeting the quality standard of the formal seed sector in the previous year (tonnes)

Average sowing rate (kg/ha)

The indicator is calculated as the percentage of area supplied with seed meeting the quality standard of the formal seed sector for the five most widely cultivated crops in the country for the most recent year with available relevant statistics.

Show Data

National Focal Point rating for the country/region selected is displayed.

Area of the 5 main crops planted with seeds that meet the formal standards of quality, percentage is the percentage of area supplied with seeds meeting the quality standard of the formal seed sector for the five most widely cultivated crops in the selected country/region reported by the NFP for the most recent year with available relevant statistics.

Visualize Data

A map showing reporting countries is displayed using a colour gradient based on the percentage of area supplied with seeds meeting the quality standard of the formal seed sector for the five most widely cultivated crops in the selected country/region reported by the NFP for the most recent year with available relevant statistics. Actual country data are depicted as a pop-up box when the mouse is placed over the country in the map.

A histogram of the percentages is displayed by CGRFA regions. Actual values are depicted as a pop-up box when the mouse is placed over the histogram bar.
