Abstract
The report contains the papers and proceedings of the FAO/UNDP seminar on reclamation and management of calcareous soils in the Near East and North Africa in November/December 1972. From the proceedings of the seminar it became clear that calcareous soils can be productive if the right soil and water management practices are followed. There is a need in the Region under irrigated as well as rainfed conditions to expedite research on reclamation and management of calcareous soils with special consideration to water utilization and fertilization and to strengthen the technical training and the extension services.

Abstract
Sandy soils are of widespread occurrence in the Near East region. In the paper, a review is made of the classification, distribution and agricultural potentialities of the sandy soils in the region. The distribution and origin of sandy soils are given on a country basis. A scheme is outlined for developing the agricultural potentialities based on (i) survey of the resources of sandy soils and respective needs for conservation, reclamation and improvement and (ii) programme formulation and implementation for their utilization.

Abstract
The papers discusses different types of drainage on sandy soils. The type of drainage to be applied depends largely upon the type of sand. In general designed sub-drainage systems will tend to be deep and relatively narrowly spaced on fine sands that have a high silt and clay content, whilst they may be shallower and more widely spaced as the coarseness of the sand increases and silt and clay decrease.

Abstract
Following an analysis of small farmers' strategies and modern strategies for erosion control, this document presents a new approach - that of land husbandry - based on improved use of farmers' land and labour. In practical terms, land husbandry aims at improving infiltration, increasing the biomass and better management of available nutrients to enhance crop growth. This study is based on the outcome of 30 years of research, primarily in French-speaking Africa, and includes ten case-studies from West Africa, mountainous regions (Haiti, Ecuador, Rwanda and Algeria) and a temperate region (France).

Abstract
Small farmers living on steeplands in the tropics comprise a large sector of the world population. They operate in subsistence agricultural systems using traditional technologies designed to achieve sustained crop production at very low yield and income levels. Thus, most steeplands have relatively stable, sustained production systems with minimum land degradation. However, there is a growing awareness that sustainability of subsistence agriculture on steeplands is steadily deteriorating as a result of rapid growing population and overexploitation of the land resource base. Given the various limitations affecting steeplands agriculture, new soil management and conservation options remain. This bulletin attempts to explore potential avenues for developing strategies to maintain sustainability of steeplands agriculture. To maintain sustainability, however, significant improvements in crop production on steeplands must come from improved soil management practices focusing on soil and water conservation, improved crop management, and use of cropping systems designed to reduce soil erosion and maintain soil productivity.

Abstract
Sandy soils are generally poor in plant nutrients and the nutrients applied to these soils are subject to loss by irrigation water. Fertilization of sandy soils is therefore a necessary practice. The paper discusses the consequences of organic and inorganic fertilization of sandy soils and suggests methods which may decrease the loss of applied nutrients, especially N leaching. A programme for field investigations is suggested.

Abstract
The paper summarizes some preliminary results of lysimeter studies on the dynamics of calcium in the irrigated calcareous soils of South Lebanon. The research results confirm that irrigation of calcareous soils with water containing high percentages of calcium carbonate shows a clear enough increase in the quantity of calcium carbonate in the soil, an increase which in the long term could have a harmful effect on the plants.

Abstract
Irrigation water is becoming more and more scarce in the region and the use of lower quality water is increasing. Criteria such as the total salt concentration, sodium percentage, residual sodium carbonate and boron are used for setting standards of water quality for irrigation. The paper discusses the possibilities of using lower quality water on sandy soils and how the salt accumulation can be prevented by adequate drainage systems. Examples are given of the use of low quality groundwater to irrigate sandy soils in some countries of the region.

Abstract
The paper outlines the main factors governing efficient water conveyance, particularly in relation to sandy soils. Efficient conveyance requires adequater and properly built structures and is also dependent on efficient operation and maintenance. The use of pipelines for water conveyance should be considered as an alternative to open lined canal networks, especially in the terminal portion of networks where diameters are small but total lengths of conveyance are high, and where other advantages of pipes such as reduced interference with mechanized farming and saving of productive land are important.

Abstract
The widespread occurence of sandy soils in the Near East region, as well as in other parts of the world, entails the need to pool available information and to coordinate research work on their effective utilization. The paper cites a number of possible lines of research on sandy soils. An approach, based on regional cooperation is suggested: soil survey for the delineation of sandy soils susceptible to wind erosion, establishment of representative pilot stations for field, greenhouse and laboratory experiments, establishment of representative pilot areas for land and water development studies on sandy soils, collection and exchange of information and execution of fundamental research.

Abstract
Calcareous soils tend to be low in organic matter and available nitrogen. The high pH level results in unavailability of phospate and sometimes zinc and iron. Potential productivity is very high where adequate nutrients and water can be supplied. Many of the calcareous soils under cultivation are irrigated and the irrigation water may supply crops with all the amounts needed for such elements as magnesium, potassium, sulphate, chloride and boron depending on the salt content of the water. The paper discusses nitrogen fertilization, phosphorus fertilization and micronutrient fertilization as well as organic materials as fertilizers. Plant nutrient interactions for different crops are stated.

Abstract
The report contains the papers and proceedings of the FAO/UNDP seminar on reclamation and management of sandy soils in the Near East and North Africa in December 1973. From the proceedings of the seminar it became clear that sandy soils can be productive if the right soil and water management practices are followed. There is a need in the Region under irrigated as well as rainfed conditions to expedite research on reclamation and management of sandy soils with special consideration to water utilization and fertilization and to strengthen the technical training and the extension services.

Abstract
Soil and water management practices encompass a wide range of interests, from the microscopic flow of water in fine pores to the overall hydrologic and water quality assessment of entire river basins. This paper reviews some recent research on the application of soil-water flow theory to field situations, trends in irrigation practices and scheduling in the southwestern United States, and advances in river basin salinity control.

Abstract
This publication addresses issues related to tillage, from the soil resources in Africa and tillage needs and practices to some of the climatic factors to consider in decision-making for tillage. It discusses soil sealing and crusting, a widely occurring phenomenon, particularly on sandy soils in the semi-arid areas of the region. A chapter on adoption of conservation tillage in Zimbabwe is included as an example of tillage practices in some of the countries in the region.

Abstract
The paper presents some physical properties of the highly calcareous soils, focussing specifically on soil texture in relation to the particle size of calcium carbonate and diffusivity of water through calcareous soils. Soil crusting is discussed with regard to the moisture regime effect on seedling emergence and factors affecting its strength. Experiments are presented to show that the tilth of these highly calcareous soils can be effected by the use of different tillage implements and techniques.

Abstract
The main themes of that bulletin are that management of soil productivity is central to sustainable dryland cropping and that successful management depends on understanding the mechanisms underlying soil productivity and recognizing non-technical factors such as human goals. It follows that the publication's conclusions are not prescriptive; rather it aims to encourage researchers and policy-makers to work jointly with farmers to develop better cropping systems and to devise locally acceptable indicators of sustainability.
