Less than three months before the Global Parliamentary Summit takes place, the organizers of the event are finalizing the details.

The Spanish Senate prepares to to receive over 100 parliamentarians from different countries from Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, Africa and Europe. They will all meet in Madrid on October 29th and 30th in order to advance the political commitment to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 2 (SDG2): to eradicate hunger, achieve food security and improve nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture.

"The work of parliamentarians is key to place food and nutrition security at the highest level of the political and legislative agendas," said Director General of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), José Graziano da Silva. "When public policies and programs are supported by stable and inclusive legislative processes, indicators of malnutrition and food insecurity improve significantly," he added.

FAO, together with the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), has supported since 2006 the Parliamentary Front against Hunger in Latin America and the Caribbean (FPH-ALC), a plural group of legislators who seek to eradicate hunger and malnutrition in the region through legislation and effective public policies. Thanks to its pioneering work, the Front has become a reference in the organization of the Summit.

"Parliamentarians are allies of the Executive in the fight against hunger. The functions of parliamentarians are linked to the preparation and approval of laws, budgets and oversight, and so are fundamental to meet global challenges," said Luisa María Calderón, Coordinator of FPH-ALC.

The Global Parliamentary Summit is approaching. For this reason, this week the official website of the Summit has been officially launched. It includes news, publications and multimedia material related to the work of parliamentarians in the fight against hunger. Likewise, the running up of the Summit can also be followed on the Twitter account of FAO Spain, launched last June.

2030 Agenda

The UN 2030 Agenda urges countries to redouble their efforts to achieve SDG2, which aims to end hunger, achieve food security and improve nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture using inclusive approaches. According to FAO data, after a decade-long decline, world hunger seems to be increasing again, affecting 11% of the world's population. It is estimated that the number of undernourished people increased from 777 million in 2015 to 815 million in 2016. In addition, the triple burden of malnutrition, in which undernutrition, overnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies coexist, has intensified. Overweight in children under five is becoming a growing problem in most regions, and adult obesity continues to increase in all of them.
