Training tools for family poultry production


The year 2014 is the International Year of Family Farming (IYFF) with the goal to raise the profile of family farming and smallholder production and their importance for food security and poverty eradication. Many people in developing countries keep small numbers of poultry for home consumption, to sell and for various socio-cultural uses and family poultry production is an important component of the livelihoods of many small farmers. Family poultry encompasses all small-scale poultry production systems found in rural, urban and peri-urban areas of developing countries. Rather than defining the production systems per se, the term is used to describe poultry production practised by individual families as a means of obtaining food security, income and gainful employment.

Making full benefit of the opportunities from family poultry production requires sustainable improvements of the production environment through training and providing extension and support services for producers. Technical staffs and poultry development workers are a key human resource to ensure that family poultry can be exploited to the benefit of the world’s most vulnerable sectors of society. In order to achieve that objective technical staffs need to have the right messages that address the needs and conditions of family poultry producers.

Such messages and information were developed and compiled for the training of poultry experts as part of the IFAD-funded “Smallholder Poultry Development Programme” which was implemented by FAO in cooperation with the International Network for Family Poultry Development and the International Rural Poultry Centre (IRPC) of the Kyeema Foundation. This information is now made available through 13 short educational videos that address major issues that are relevant for the development of family poultry production. The videos are prepared for self study of technical staffs and for use in training sessions.
