The first report on the State of the World’s Animal Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture

 

coverThe State of the World’s Animal Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture was published in 2007 as the first comprehensive global assessment of livestock biodiversity and its management.
It consists of five parts:

    1. The state of agricultural biodiversity in the livestock sector
    2. Livestock sector trends
    3. The state of capacities in animal genetic resources management
    4. State of the art in the management of animal genetic resources
    5. Needs and challenges in animal genetic resources management

The report was the outcome of an extensive reporting and preparatory process initiated by the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture. The main inputs were 169 country reports, along with breed-related data entered by countries into the Domestic Animal Diversity Information System (DAD-IS). The preparation of country reports was based on guidelines and supported through extensive training activities (see training pack and lists of workshops and participants). The country reporting was complemented by 9 reports from international organizations and 12 thematic studies commissioned to address specific aspects of animal genetic resources management. More than 90 authors and reviewers were involved in the preparation of the main report.

 

In addition to the preparation of the main report, the process involved the compilation of subregional and regional reports. Each of these documents consists of two parts:

    1. a fact sheet (background material on the significance of livestock to the subregion or region’s economy and food security; the characteristics, distribution, and relative significance of the subregion or region’s various livestock production systems; and the characteristics of its animal genetic resources); and
    2. a synthesis of priorities identified during consultations held at the subregional or regional level to review a draft report on strategic priorities for action that had been prepared by FAO as a global-level synthesis of priorities identified in the country reports.

The State of the World report provided the basis for the development of the Global Plan of Action for Animal Genetic Resources, the first internationally agreed framework specifically addressing the management of animal genetic resources.
