West Asia Rinderpest Eradication Campaign (WAREC): early coordinating role 1989-1994
The WAREC project aimed to establish the capability to determine levels of immunity in WAREC countries, to identify areas where revaccination was required and to rapidly create a situation where immunity levels were sufficiently high (over 85%) to break virus transmission and lead to eradication. The immediate objective were to minimise the high losses associated with the death and poor productivity of recovered animals, as well as establishment of confidence in the ability of the vaccination programme to eradicate the virus.
The budget allocated for the project was USD 1,263,800.
The participating countries were: Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq, Iran, Turkey, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Syria and Yemen.
