The Secretariat is vested in FAO, IAEA, AU/IBAR and WHO , all with internationally mandated responsibilities for various aspects of the control of trypanosomiasis. The Secretariat is responsible for providing support for the Programme Committee and for implementing Committee decisions. The primary functions are thus administration and coordination of all aspects of the Programme, including facilitation of communications between Governments, donors, national and international organisations, NARS and NGOs.
FAO hosts the PAAT Secretariat.

The Environmental Management of Insect Borne Diseases Entity of the Animal Health Service is responsible, inter alia, for Tsetse and Trypanosomiasis matters. The Entity’s policy is to provide support to Member Nations and Governments in defining and setting criteria and guidelines to alleviate the obstacles emerging from ecological and environmental driven factors responsible for disease emerging, risk and spread, and improve public health.

Within the Department of Control of Neglected Tropical Diseases, the Innovative and Intensified Disease Management (IDM) Unit focuses on diseases for which cost-effective control tools do not exist and large scale use of existing tools are limited. The diseases include Buruli ulcer, Chagas, Cholera, Human African Trypanosomiasis and Leishmaniasis.

The goal of the Unit is to allow these diseases to be easily managed within the primary health care system and ultimately eliminate them as a public health problem. The methodology applied consist on: increase awareness and advocacy, capacity building and training in endemic countries for disease control and management, monitoring of epidemiological trends and drug resistance, networking to ensure the most efficient involvement of all actors, and collaboration with the research community to promote access to innovation and development of new tools.
