Agricultural Atlas of Viet Nam: A Depiction of the 2001 Rural Agriculture and Fisheries Census
Vietnam for the first time combines detailed agricultural statistical data from the 2001 Rural Agriculture and Fisheries Census with small-area geographic information system (GIS) data. A great variety of census variables has been analyzed and presented as maps at commune level. The broad range of agricultural statistics contained in the atlas is designed to provide a comprehensive overview of the geography of agricultural production in rural Vietnam.
The atlas was produced jointly by the Department of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries Statistics of the Vietnamese General Statistics Office (GSO), and the Pro-Poor Livestock Policy Initiative (PPLPI) of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. Funding was provided by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and the PPLPI.

Poultry Production & Avian Influenza in Viet Nam
Highly pathogenic avian influenza, ‘bird flu’, presents an unusual opportunity for international cooperation because millions of poor rural households can contribute significantly to the global commons of pandemic disease prevention. Their participation in this effort must be better understood and indeed rewarded if success is to be achieved.
Bird flu constitutes a serious threat to poor rural smallholder poultry producers, both directly through mortality, but probably even more so indirectly through the rigorous disease control measures applied by animal health authorities. The latter may deprive households of small but valuable amounts of protein in their diets, much needed petty cash income, and, most importantly, an investment opportunity for escaping poverty.
