Description Kees van Reenen is senior researcher Farm Animal Welfare in the Animal Behaviour and Welfare group of Wageningen UR Livestock Research in Lelystad, The Netherlands. He graduated at Wageningen University in 1988, and has been involved in animal welfare research since 1992. He is the author or co-author of over 40 peer-reviewed scientific publications. His current research mainly focuses on the assessment and monitoring of farm animal welfare, and on adaptive capacity and stress reactivity in farm animals. Topics of his ongoing projects include: a) The development of a veal calf welfare monitoring system (role: project leader, and member of PhD supervising committee), b) The development of a horse welfare monitoring system (role: scientist, scientist and member of advisory committee), c) Adaptive capacity of dairy cows (role; project leader and scientist), and d) Quantifying underlying traits of adaptive capacity in pigs: tail biting as a case study (role: scientist, and member of PhD supervising committee). Research projects are mostly multidisciplinary by nature, with input from behavioural sciences, veterinary sciences, genetics and breeding, and neurobiology. Moreover, both foreign research partners as well as partners from the agricultural industry are frequently involved. Kees van Reenen maintains collaborations with The University of Padova in Italy, the Institut Supérieur d’Agriculture (ISA) in Lille France, the Scottish Agricultural College (SAC) in the UK, the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Uppsala, Sweden, and with a number of agricultural companies including IceRobotics (UK), CRV Holding (The Netherlands), and the Dutch veal industry (VanDrie Group, Alpuro Group, Denkavit). Within Wageningen University, he closely collaborates with scientists from the Adaptation Physiology Group, the Animal Production Systems Group, and the Animal Nutrition Group. He is regularly involved in international projects, and is presently workpackage leader of two workpackages within the EU-funded Integrated Project Welfare Quality®.
