CALLISTO - Companion Animals multisectoriaL interprofessionaL and Interdisciplinary Strategic Think tank On zoonoses.
CALLISTO is an international research project financed by the 7th Framework Programme of the European Commission and implemented by an international network of research institutes, universities and veterinary associations. The aim of CALLISTO think tank is to provide an overview of the current situation with regard to the role of companion animals as a potential source of infectious diseases for people and food animals. In a three years cycle, CALLISTO identifies knowledge and technology gaps for the most important zoonoses and proposes targeted actions to reduce the risk of zoonotic diseases transferred via companion animals. One main component of CALLISTO initiative concerns communication and dissemination of project results: the communication strategy is based mainly on the implementation of a dedicated web site, containing useful information, interactive tools, publications and project documents. The website www.callistoproject.eu informs relevant stakeholders about the outcomes of CALLISTO conferences and experts groups meetings, and it promotes awareness on objectives and activities of the think tank in order to increase general public understanding of the impact of companion animal zoonoses, and to obtain the support of political stakeholders in combating zoonosis outbreaks and diffusion at a European and National level.
