Country: Indonesia

Date: August 2001

Demonstrator/trainer: Bachtar Bakrie, Research and Assessment Institute for Agricultural Technology, Jakarta

National counterpart organisation: Research and Assessment Institute for Agricultural Technology, Jakarta

Type of demonstration: 5 regional workshops, at either farmers group or milk collection centres

Locations: 5 different sites in Bogor area

Sector descriptor: Demonstrations were carried out at either farmers group or milk collection centres in Bogor area located in Java Island. More than 95% of cattle population is in Java Island which are reared mainly by small-holders (less than 5 heads per herd). There are well-established cooperative type milk producer organisations and the cooperatives are sufficiently equipped with cooling facilities. However, access to the cooling unit is often difficult for rural farmers, especially for ones living in the mountainous area due to the unimproved road condition.

Key Questions/Feedback (see appendix): Farmers participated the demonstration were keen to apply the LP-s milk preservation but it was recognised that agreement with Cooperatives, Cooperative Union and Processors Association would be required.

Follow-up: Consider the possibility of participation to the regional LP-s demonstration programme in Asia in order to facilitate the adoption of LP-s milk preservation and to develop national strategy to incorporate LP-s application into national legislation.
