PROVINCIAL PROGRAM FOR SUSTAINABLE FOOD PRODUCTION IN PERI-URBAN (PSAP) PROVINCE OF SANTA FE, ARGENTINA: an experience of public policy for ecological farming

The document synthesizes an innovative public policy carried out by the Government of the Province of Santa Fe (meso level of government), Argentine Republic, between 2017 and 2019, whose actions and results contributed to improving food and nutritional security and sovereignty, as well as to the development of a model of sustainable agricultural production.

We started from the following working hypothesis: in the Province of Santa Fe, the possibility of scaling policies for the construction of sustainable food systems depends on the successful and simultaneous approach of at least four decisive factors, namely: a) land use planning, b) agroecological reconversion of productive units with the development of short marketing chains, added value, and differentiation commercial c) co-creation and exchange of knowledge d) development of appropriate technologies.

A Provincial government, 23 local governments and 92 farmers were encouraged to explore an alternative to the predominant model, demonstrating not only that it is technically viable, but also that it is economically convenient, socially superior, and politically and environmentally essential.
