The role of digital agriculture in agroecology and food sovereignty

Schola Campesina contribution to the open consultation on International Digital Council for Food and Agriculture

The need for an inclusive and multi-stakeholder approach to discuss digital technologies in agriculture and food has been reflected in January 2019, during the Global Forum for Food and Agriculture (GFFA). Approximately 74 ministers of agriculture from around the world and high-level representatives of international organizations committed to use the potential of digitalization to increase agricultural production and productivity, while improving sustainability, efficient resource use, employment and entrepreneurial opportunities, and living conditions, especially in rural areas.

The agriculture ministers called upon FAO to draw up, in consultation with stakeholders, a concept note for the establishment of an International Digital Council for Food and Agriculture to help everyone harness the opportunities presented by digitalization. FAO housed an open consultation process titled ''Towards the establishment of an International Digital Council for Food and Agriculture'' to develop the concept note requested.

This brief presents the comments of Schola Campesina in the consultation process. Digital agriculture is still in the hands of few and in this moment is intensifying the polarisation in rural areas between poor and rich farmers, leading the latter to be extremely dependent on technology. Digital innovations are introduced without comprehensive impact assessments on economic, ecological and social aspects or regulatory frameworks by governments.
