The Buenos Aires Province of Argentina in Argentina launches a program that promotes agroecology and local markets

The Province of Buenos Aires launched an institutional initiative called "Alimentos Bonaerenses", made up of six comprehensive programs aimed at strengthening food production and productive development, especially focused on small producers. The initiative includes among its lines of action the promotion of agroecology and local markets.

 The objective of the program is to generate added value and rural employment, promoting local development in each region of the Province of Buenos Aires.

The promotion of agroecology is intended as a strategy to stimulate productive and economic alternatives, and to diversify the local supply of food of high nutritional quality, the generation of genuine rural employment and the reduction of the environmental impact of production systems. In addition, it will allow for productive responses in those areas surrounding urbanizations where there are restrictions for fumigation.

A registry of producers will identify the producers, farms, production processes and agroecological management practices, as well as those producers in transition. Likewise, a network of facilitators will be created to provide training, technical assistance and support to producers and their organizations.

 The program will also have other axes related to the creation and strengthening of local markets, support to producer cooperatives, the supply of inputs for small-scale production, access to financing tools and the promotion of fishing activities. The different axes of the program aim to strengthen the added value in origin, promoting productive, economic and social complementation between the different localities, with a view to the integral development of the Province.

 FAO and the Province of Buenos Aires will work together to promote this program within the framework of the Scaling up Agroecology Initiative, together with several international organizations that support the transition towards sustainable food systems.
