In an innovative leap forward, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations has broken new ground by training Cambodia’s National Institute of StatisticsMinistry of Planning and Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into its agricultural statistics work. This initiative marks a significant milestone as it stands as the first AI training that FAO has undertaken globally, with the aim of empowering a government's statistical office with the latest AI technologies and the use of large language models. Hosted over three days from 13 to 15 March 2024, the Introduction to AI training program starts a journey towards revolutionizing the way agricultural data is collected, analysed, and utilized in Cambodia.

Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming industries worldwide, and agriculture is no exception. FAO Cambodia Statistics Todd Hunkin explains:

“The potential of AI to process and analyse extensive datasets with unprecedented speed offers a unique opportunity to enhance the accuracy and efficiency of agricultural statistics. This training program is designed to navigate the complexities of AI, covering essential topics from effective communication with AI systems, to optimizing coding processes for statistical analysis. It acknowledges the challenges and ethical considerations associated with AI, ensuring that participants are well-equipped to use these technologies responsibly.”

The Introduction to AI training is not just about learning to use new tools. It is about reimagining the processes of statistical learning in Cambodia. Participants are delving into practical applications of AI, such as generating and reviewing programming code, interpreting error messages, and leveraging AI for English language improvements. Moreover, the program highlights AI's role as a critical learning resource, capable of teaching complex topics such as research and statistics methodologies.

The significance of this training extends beyond technological advancement. It aligns perfectly with the themes of the Royal Government of Cambodia's new Pentagonal Strategy-Phase 1. Digitalization was introduced as the fifth pillar of this comprehensive strategy, underscoring the Government's commitment to incorporating modern technologies into its core sectors, including agriculture. As one of the key tenets of the updated strategy, agriculture's integration with digital technologies through AI is poised to bolster the sector's productivity, sustainability, and resilience.

This initiative is a collaborative effort that reflects the dedication and hard work of colleagues from the MAFF and the NIS-MOP. Their ongoing commitment to enhancing Cambodia's agricultural statistics through innovation is instrumental in driving the agriculture sector forward, towards the transformation of agrifood systems for better production, better nutrition a better environment and a better life.

The training is taking place at the National Institute of Cambodia offices.
