A Facilitator’s Guide to Gender-Inclusive Financial Literacy and Land Rights

Learning and applying simple financial management rules can rapidly improve the economic wellbeing of an individual or family. Yet, in rural areas of Kyrgyzstan, there is a general lack of knowledge around basic principles of financial management, hindering household economic development. Although land is a key asset in rural areas, there is a similarly limited understanding of how land ownership at the individual, household and community levels contributes to financial security, and how it should figure into financial planning decisions. Gender issues are central to financial and land management. Overcoming financial and land-related barriers that disadvantage and discriminate against women is critical to the well being of rural women, their households and their communities. In addition to general finance principles, there is growing interest in Islamic finance in Kyrgyzstan. The financial literacy training presented in this guide responds to these multiple realities and challenges.
