This first issue after the merger of the old Baobab with the Kilimo Endelevu Africa (KEA) looks at the importance of livestock in the livelihoods of farmers. Livestock is an integral part of most family farms, and fulfills many functions such as food, assets and fertilizer. This issue focuses on animal care and management.

Managing livestock for pastoralists is sometimes a real challenge due to misguided policies. Restricted movements may lead to unsustainable use due to overgrazing in accessible areas. Empowering pastoralists to take part in policy making will enable them to secure tenure and return to sustainably managing their herds.

A good example of small scale livestock production can be seen in Malawi where diversifying the livestock and integrating it with fish farming improved the livelihoods and enabled a more diverse diet. One of the articles explains the technical side of small scale pig farming whilst another shows the benefits of raising goats for a multitude of products.
