Cooking together in Zambia – local nutrition groups work together to diversify family diets

In this short film, local people and field scientists from the Barotse Floodplain, Zambia explore the potential for local nutrition groups to empower communities to take actions toward improving the nutrition of their families through diversifying diets in an effort to address high levels of malnutrition and declining stocks of fish which traditionally represented an important ingredient in the local daily menu.

By working directly with communities through a variety of approaches, Bioversity International’s research draws upon both scientific and traditional knowledge to promote ways of using seasonally available foods to prepare nutritious meals. The film features participants of the cooking groups who share how cooking together, exchanging recipes and developing cook books and seasonal food calendars has helped them to learn how to prepare more nutritious family meals using locally available seasonal ingredients.
