Turkey's Newest Farmers

For refugees from Syria who have been in Turkey for years already with no income, a job can mean the world. It means buying winter clothes for your children, getting them to school and even just being able to feed the family. It means no more endless days of wandering the city hoping to find work, or queuing in lines for emergency rations.

Whether they were doctors, students or farmers previously, many refugees find that the skills and experience they acquired back home can be irrelevant in a new country where they don’t speak the language and business operates in a different way.

South-eastern Turkey already has one of the highest unemployment rates in the country. This region has now absorbed most of the 3.5 million Syrian refugees who have arrived since the start of the war, and competition for jobs is fierce.

Yet employers are looking for people with specific skills, and say it’s difficult to find the right people. Agriculture is one of the sectors that has the capacity to employ more people: farms and agricultural producers need skilled workers to get their companies operating to their full potential.
