Regional workshop strenghtens knowledge on Codex

16/09/2023

The Latin America and Caribbean Region (CCLAC), with the support of the Codex Secretariat and the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), held a virtual workshop con Codex and its tools, with interpretation in Spanish, English and French, on 31 August and 5 September 2023. More than 200 delegates participated each day.

The topics covered during the webinar included the foundations of Codex, its importance in contributing to ensuring food safety and fair practices in food trade. The Codex process for developing a standard, including all necessary steps, was also presented and discussed into details. The main objective of the workshop was to reinforce the knowledge of the region's delegates, encouraging them to participate actively in each of the Codex activities.

A simulation of an Electronic Working Group (EWG) was carried out to introduce new delegates to this topic, explaining how to add comments, and the functions of each Member when creating and participating in a EWG. The functioning of the Codex Online Comment System (OCS) was also explained with the direct participation of a Member Country.

Costa Rica and Guyana participated in the training, explaining the formation of their national Codex committees and their internal processes for generating Codex-related information, which was a great opportunity for countries to further listen to success stories.
