CCLAC gears up for the coordinating committee with a workshop on Codex etools

11/04/2024

A virtual “Codex ABC” training event was held on 3 and 5 April 2024 for the Latin America and Caribbean region (CCLAC), with the support of the Codex Secretariat and the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), with translation into Spanish, English and French. More than 630 delegates from 27 countries of the region attended.

The topics discussed were the principles of Codex and its importance in food safety, fair practices in the food trade and the elaboration of standards. The eight steps of the standards setting process and the factors that interfere in the process were reviewed.

A simulation of an electronic working group (EWG) was carried out to introduce new delegates to this topic, explaining how to add comments and the functions of each Member when creating an EWG. Also, with the help of a Member Country, the functioning of the Codex Online Commenting System (OCS) was explained.

Honduras and Saint Lucia also participated, explaining the formation of their national committees and their internal processes for generating Codex-related information, which was a great opportunity for the countries to visualize success stories.

The main objective of the training was to reinforce the knowledge of the region's delegates, encouraging them to participate actively and effectively in each of the Codex activities.
