Fishing Safety

FAO joins global alliance on drowning prevention

11/09/2023

25 July is World Drowning Prevention Day. This global advocacy event serves as an opportunity to remind ourselves that fishing is one of the world’s most dangerous industries.  Accidents and fatalities at sea, while fishing or in port exceed those of the most accident-prone activities on land. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is one of the first organizations that answered to the call to mark World Drowning Prevention Day, established by the World Health Organization (WHO) to raise awareness on drowning. FAO works with countries and partners including the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to promote a safety culture in the industry.  Together we can save lives of fisherfolk.
