2022-2025
Malawi and Zambia have alarming levels of poverty and malnutrition. Although food security and dietary diversity are high on the national agenda, the need for food assistance persists and this has been exacerbated by the COVID 19 pandemic. The two countries are concerned mainly with strained food supply and trade, decreased access to external farm inputs, unaffordability of healthy diets, unfavourable food environments and increased food wastage.
Promoting smart food to support the environment and improve nutrition
The main goal of this project is to support Malawi and Zambia in their efforts to recovery from COVID-19 and transform towards more inclusive, diversified and resilient agrifood systems, through smart food. The project adopts principles from recent initiatives that aim at enhancing the production and use of smart food in local diets, for improved nutrition and income.
The activities of the project will be structured to support a holistic agrifood systems approach, building capacity of farmers and supply system actors to deliver nutrient-dense foods, underpinned by an inclusive implementation, knowledge sharing and feedback process at local, district and national level through Agricultural Innovation Platforms.
The activities will focus on improving:
