Food Systems for Shared Prosperity: Achieving equitable, inclusive and sustainable economic prosperity in food systems and rural development

21/07/2023

Improving environment, society and health while also generating shared economic prosperity is a significant challenge in agrifood systems. Despite the immense benefits provided by agrifood systems, many, particularly the poorest and the traditionally marginalized groups, do not share in this prosperity.

Trade, agribusiness, and investment in productivity are some of the policy areas used to drive economic prosperity. However, there will be no true prosperity, especially for the most vulnerable, if it is not shared and if the various dimensions of sustainability (economic, environmental, social) are not considered.

Therefore, to reflect on the challenges and solutions for shared prosperity, a Leadership Dialogue on “Food Systems for Shared Prosperity: Achieving equitable, inclusive and sustainable economic prosperity in agrifood systems and rural development” will be held within the framework of the UNFSS+2 Stocktaking Moment, on 25 July 2023 from 14.30 to 16.00. The event will take place in the Green Room (for those who will be attending in person) and be webcasted online (register here  to follow all events).

Discussions at the event will enlighten the participants on how to manage challenging tradeoffs and identify the most critical investments needed to enable prosperity, inclusion and sustainability in agrifood systems. In particular, discussions will center around two main questions:

· What are the key challenges in ensuring economic benefits of agrifood systems are equitably and inclusively shared, and/or bring positive environmental and social outcomes?

· What solutions have been tried and tested in practice that have enabled an inclusive and sustainable approach to generating economic prosperity through food systems?

Contributors from a range of backgrounds will be present at the Dialogue - from government representatives, World Trade Organization, United Nations Industrial Development Organization, UN Women and academia.
