EVAL-ForwARD is a new Community of Practice on evaluation for Food Security, Agriculture and Rural Development, jointly promoted by the evaluation offices of the Rome-based agencies: CGIAR (formerly known as the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research), FAO, IFAD and WFP.

Its first public launch took place at EvalColombo2018 during the side event The role of Evaluation in the public sector: how best to support national capacities. Conference participants had the opportunity to engage with the Directors of the Evaluation offices of FAO, IFAD and WFP on the aims, opportunities and thematic focus of this initiative.

The objectives of EVAL-ForwARD are to enhance awareness and capacities at country-level about evaluation in the agriculture, food security and rural development sectors, with a close focus on the evaluation of efforts to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 2 – End Hunger.

Evaluators, development practitioners, researchers and government officials are welcome to join the Community of Practice and:

• Exchange evaluation information, practice and knowledge;
• Propose resources and blogs;
• Post information about events, conferences, training opportunities.

The first EVAL-ForwARD webinar on Evaluating with a Sustainable Development Goal 2 lens: experiences to date is planned for the second half of October and aims to uncover the challenges encountered and the good practices on which the development community could build, fostering further discussion and exchanges on the topic, which is at the core of the Community’s mandate.

EVAL-ForwARD uses a Dgroup mailing list for knowledge-sharing and a website as a repository of information and resources. To sign up to the Community and to find out more, please visit: www.evalforward.org

The new IPC Global platform offers a cleaner design, more flexibility in terms of structure and strengthens the access and exchange of information on IPC. It consists of two main portals:

1. About IPC and Partnerships that gives you access to information on IPC implementation both at global and country level, upcoming events, key resources and featured stories;
2. A dedicated IPC Analysis Portal that gives you access to all IPC analyses released by the countries adopting the IPC classification for analyzing acute and chronic food insecurity, and acute malnutrition through a custom action filter and interactive map.

Les liens entre commerce et sécurité alimentaire bénéficient d’une attention accrue dans les programmes axés sur le commerce et le développement. Le commerce équitable est reconnu comme un facteur déterminant en vue d’atteindre les objectifs du Programme de développement durable à l’horizon 2030 et l'Objectif Faim Zéro dans le contexte des changements climatiques.

Compte tenu de l’évolution constante des modes de consommation et de production, le commerce mondial de produits agricoles devrait continuer de croître au cours de la prochaine décennie. Le défi consiste maintenant à faire en sorte que l'expansion du commerce agricole œuvre en faveur de l'élimination de la faim, de la malnutrition et de l'insécurité alimentaire à l'échelle mondiale. Ce défi est au cœur de l’appui fourni par l’Organisation pour l'alimentation et l'agriculture (FAO) à ses États Membres en vue de la préparation d'accords commerciaux, en particulier sous l'égide de l'Organisation mondiale du commerce (OMC).

La FAO, en collaboration avec des partenaires clés, organisera et participera à divers événements en marge de la 11ème Conférence ministérielle de l'OMC à Buenos Aires. Nous encourageons fortement ceux qui sont accrédités à se joindre à nous et à participer à l'un des événements mentionnés ci-dessous. Ce sera une excellente occasion de faire part des expériences de vos pays en matière d’atteinte de la sécurité alimentaire et d'amélioration de la nutrition dans le cadre du système commercial multilatéral de l'OMC.

Accra/Abidjan/Rome - The number of undernourished people in sub-Saharan Africa has increased mainly due to the impact of conflict and climate change with the situation pointing to the urgent need to build affected communities' resilience and to find peaceful solutions that strengthen food security,  FAO said today.

The prevalence of chronic undernourishment appears to have risen from 20.8 to 22.7 percent between 2015 and 2016, according to FAO's Africa Regional Overview of Food Security and Nutrition report (2017).

This year's report, which features the theme: "The Food Security and Nutrition - Conflict Nexus: Building Resilience for Food Security, Nutrition and Peace" was launched today at the joint FAO/WHO Africa Regional Symposium on Sustainable Food Systems for Healthy Diets and Improved Nutrition, taking place in Abidjan from 16 to 17 November 2017.  

 The Asia Pacific Symposium (10-11 November 2017, Bangkok) links to the FAO and WHO International Symposium on Sustainable Food Systems for Healthy Diets and Improved Nutrition held in Rome in December 2016, and is one of four follow-up events focused on specific world regions. The aims are to enhance agriculture and food systems’ visibility, create policy and programme options, promote sustainable diets and build partnerships through taking stock of evidence on transformational change in food systems toward sustainability, and their link to positive health and nutrition outcomes.  The Symposium will also develop and strengthen information platforms on nutrition-sensitive agriculture and food systems for countries in the region so that they can share that knowledge amongst consumers, producers and other stakeholders. Major interventions for good nutrition governance and effective local level implementation will be identified and promoted. 

The Asia-Pacific region, home to most of the world’s undernourished people, needs urgent action to improve diets and reset its food systems which are critical to the delivery of healthy, nutritious foods, FAO said today. According to the findings of FAO’s 2017 Regional Overview of Food Security and Nutrition report, there is a pressing need to tackle malnutrition alongside further promotion of the consumption of healthier foods while curbing the growth in consumption of unhealthy foods.
